EB’s Harry Potter Winter Break Contest

Think this blog has been too wordy recently, so more pics and less words for the next few days. ūüėõ¬†

Luckily, there are loads of great MOCs I want to feature,¬†starting with EB’s Harry Potter Winter Break Contest¬†that has loads of great entries as you can see below.¬† And these are just the ones that I like (ha, very hard to decide where to give the 5 points).¬† If you’ll like to see more Harry Potter locations in brick form, do pop by EB.

UPDATE: I’m¬† not sure how I missed this amazing entry by Jalkow, but here is The Magical Tent:

Some News Round-Up

If you have been making use of the RSS feeds on the right, you would have read these but just in case, here are a few notable ones:

The comments QnA in the London Toy Fair report is really long, so I did a summary of what caught my eye:

  • The new City marina sets float;
  • Jack Sparrow minifig is different in each POTC set;
  • 2 new Spongebob sets – “some sort of fairground rise and the other a vehicle” – EDIT: It’s 3816-Glove World and 3815-Heroic Heroes as listed on Brickset;
  • SW calendar features “mini models from the entire galaxy and 8 minifigs” – one minifig is a new one described as “one of the figs has not appeared in any of the films, books, cartoons and is unlikely ever to” and “all the figs have appeared before, but one of them is in new clothes, and it’s not a queen Amidala“;
  • 7879 Hoth Echo Base¬†may be¬†a TRU exclusive “no Hoth¬†sets on display, and there isn’t one in the retailers’ catalogue either. Maybe it’ll be a TRU exclusive or something“;
  • The Darth Maul and Savage minifigs have new horn pieces on their heads –¬†“a new soft plastic horn piece, a bit like a washer that goes over the stud, and ends up flush with it. It looked very effective“;
  • HP sets¬†–¬†some speculated minifigs¬†based on Huw’s descriptions:
    • Battle for Hogwarts: “consists of a couple of towers and an entranceway” –¬†Prof Sprouts in tan, HP, Snape, student (in new uniform, so can’t be¬†Neville who is a Gryffindor¬†– he¬†is able to use the Gryffindor¬†sword in the battle remember?)
    • Forbidden Forest: Hagrid, Narcissa (“two-colour hair: mostly brown with lighter brown or blonde highlights round the front edges, which I think is a first for a minifig“), HP, Voldemort (no centaurs!);
    • Knightbus: Purple, and with HP, Ernie & Stan.

  • UPDATE on 30 Jan: And no stickers on the new Cars sets. Yippee!

LEGO In-Store Adverts & Animations

Thanks to someone from Toysrus¬†Hong Kong, we have these in-store video ads and animations.¬† So instead of standing around to catch all the adverts in the store, you can now do so in the comfort of your home.¬† I suggest you find a quiet place, get a drink and get comfy before starting on the videos…¬† ūüėČ

I’ve included all¬†the new 2011 ads as well as some of the 2010 ads and animation that I particularly liked (do watch them, these are the best of the dozens of clips I went thru).¬† I’ve not seen most of them before… maybe just not spending enough time in the store?¬† Anyway loads more in the TRU¬†HK Youtube channel¬†if you are interested, just do a search/filter for ‘LEGO’ among the 333 videos.¬†(Great job TRU HK!!)¬†

Warning: You may experience slow loading time after the jump.¬† Too many deeplinked vids I guess but since I don’t believe in multiple posts on the same topic just to increase my post count…

Prelim Pics of Harry Potter LEGO Books & New Brickmasters

Yay!! Finally found them.  Figured the pics must have surfaced in order for bookstores to start placing their orders and finally found the prelim pics in the DK 2011 catalogue.

The good news? The Harry Potter Visual Dictionary¬†(called ‘Building the Magical World’ in the catalogue) comes with an exclusive minifig. The bad news? From the current prelim image, it looks to be¬†yet another Harry Potter minifig… anyway remember that the jacket cover isn’t final yet.

The Harry Potter Sticker book isn’t that interesting… nothing new on the cover that we haven’t seen before.

I’ve also included the prelim pics for the new City & NinjaGo¬†Brickmasters.¬† Not much to speculate from the NinjaGo¬†Brickmaster… just that you’ll probably get another ninja.¬† For the City Brickmaster¬†tho, it looks to be¬†very much a police themed set with a criminal minifig, a policeman¬†minifig, a car and a small helicopter.

Other interesting stuff from the website? It sheds some light on how these books will be promoted/marketed:
‚ÄĘ Launch parties at book stores across the country
‚ÄĘ Online advertising
‚ÄĘ Feature at San Diego Comic Con
‚ÄĘ Feature at New York Comic Con
‚ÄĘ Cross promote with other Harry Potter‚ĄĘ and LEGO licensees
‚ÄĘ Book Trailer
‚ÄĘ Outreach to blogs and fansites
‚ÄĘ Feature on DK.com LEGO boutique
‚ÄĘ E-newsletter feature

Outreach to blogs? Hmm… so looks like I’m giving them free publicity!¬† Anyone wants to outreach to me??? ¬†I’m up for book reviews… hehe. ¬†ūüėÄ

Btw the DK Winter 2011 Catalogue shows some junior LEGO books for the kids and the LEGO City and Star Wars sticker books.¬† Nothing that interest me so did not bother to copy them.¬† Feel free to click on the link to browse tho.¬† For Pirates of the Caribbean fans, there is a visual guide book coming (NOT LEGO, it’s a movie tie-in).¬† Useful for MOCs and dioramas perhaps? ūüôā¬† I do love the DK books for the great pics and explanations that accompanies the guide books.

One more thing… the updated 2011 Fantasia Verlag LEGO Collector book looks to be¬†delayed till Q2’2011 from Weltbild.de.¬† No indication¬†of a limited edition based on my search.¬† Anyone knows better, pls let me know k?

Anyway, here they are… enjoy! (book title links to Book Depository or Amazon – you can click on the catalogue link at the bottom if you wanna read the DK catalogue)

    Some thoughts on the 2011 sets:

    – I honestly feel quite disappointed that the rumoured girls theme is not available.¬† Having seen the trade catalogue, I can verify that it’s not in the pages that were not scanned.¬† Any chance of a Winter release? ūüė¶

    РBut it looks to be another good year, especially for Star Wars fans (loads of new minifigs and reproduced OT sets) and Harry Potter fans (3 more sets, yippee!).

    Creator is starting to look interesting too, the Lighthouse Island looks really good and it seems to be a trend that Creator sets now come with minifigs, blurring the line between Creator & City.

    РThose who want to renact minifig abduction fantasies can now do so with the new Alien Conquest theme.  Again, is it meant to draw City fans into this theme?

    – I wasn’t thrilled with the little Blacksmith set in Kingdoms, but there is another Blacksmith in the NinjaGo theme that looks better.¬† Interesting that so many of the NinjaGo¬†theme sets are for limited time release – I’m guessing TLG¬†thinks that limited releases helps to sell sets?

    Harry Potter Film Wizardry Book Scans

    Harry Potter Film Wizardry by Brian Sibley (Hardcover –¬†Oct 19, 2010)

  • Hardcover: 160 pages
  • ISBN-10: 0061997811
  • ISBN-13: 978-0061997815
  • I’ve really enjoyed the Harry Potter book.¬† Not really cos I’m a HP fan, more so cos the book’s a treasury of info and pictures.¬† A picture speaks a thousand words, so I found a few hi-res scans to share.¬†

    Best part about having the book is the ability to quickly check what a particular building looks like. e.g. the Burrow or the Lovegood house.  See for yourself.
